Life in a Small Town

Well, the election for this coming four years is now in the books.  We voted to elect three new board members to our Village Board for Boelus, Nebraska.  Two of those voted for are of the younger generation and we are so lucky to have them.  They are both employed by public schools and have their fingers on the pulse of our children's needs and wants.

Two long time members are retiring and as there needs to be at least five voting members for a quorum to pass any new ordinances for the town we needed to replace them.  One candidate does not live within the town limits so although he received many votes, he will not be able to serve on the board or vote.  However, he has stated that he will attend the meetings and we are glad of that for he is extremely knowledgeable and has been attending the meetings for several years.  The other two elected members are women, bringing the total of women on the board to three, so the board will be hearing the female voice loud and clear!

One of the retiring board members, Gene Whitefoot, has served on the board since 1952!  That is 72 years of volunteering for our community.  We will be losing a wealth of information with his retirement but he runs the community grocery store here in Boelus so he is still accessible when we have questions.

We have so many good people here in our area that volunteer their time for many events.  Most recently, a group of women who gather together once a month for coffee or adult beverages, decorated the Community Civic Center and the Vets park across the street.  This group of women come from the Village and the countryside so the farming community is represented too.

The decorating for the holiday season is done every holiday season and these women can be depended upon to get the job done.  They are the sa

me ones involved in putting on the Halloween party, the Christmas party and the Easter celebration.

Today, there is a fund raiser for the Volunteer Fire Department -- breakfast -- with a free will donation. The community comes out in force for this one.  The fire department is depended upon to put out fires of course, but they do so much more.  Car accidents, emergencies in a home, teaching children about the equipment used and what the EMT's do, they are there.

Thank you all you volunteers!  We owe you so much.
