This February weather has been warmer than usual and the snow has melted off. The ground is soggy as there was a lot of snow for the ground to absorb.
We have been busy here in the little town of Boelus, planning events and looking for ways to clean up our town. We have two Barn Quilt Workshops planned for the month of March. Rose Mapel of Artistic Innovations will be conducting both workshops. You can visit Rose's website here. https://www.artisticinnovationsne.com.
A few of us have been looking into demolishing some abandoned buildings that have outlasted their purposes. One is the dilapidated grain elevator and the office building sitting near it. They are a danger to the public in their current state. We found that the elevator could be placed on the National Registry of Historic Sites but the village feels that it would be too expensive to repair and that the structure is too far gone. There is still quite an expense to remove the structure and we are looking into grants for that purpose.
While looking into the status of the elevator, we found that several buildings and homes in town may qualify for listing on the National Registry of Historic Sites. We will be discussing this further at the Village Board meetings which are held the second Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. in the Boelus Community Center.
Our little village offers much! We have a restaurant/bar that does a brisk business on the weekends, a well stocked grocery store and a busy bank. Our volunteer fire department is of great importance to the community and will be hosting their annual fund raising feed on Saturday, March 23rd, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will also be a raffle. You can find the details on the Facebook Boelus Community page for the raffle prizes.
The Middle Loup River flows just to the South of our village limits and across the bridge are the ball fields and camping area. You can put in with a canoe or kayak and enjoy a day or two on the river.
Come visit Boelus, Nebraska! Also known as Howard City. Now how many towns do you know of that can boast they have two names!
