The Riches of August

This is one of my favorite times of the year.  The farmer's markets are bursting with goodness from gardens.  Tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, eggplant, sweet corn.  It's all available and oh, so good!  We are waiting for the roasting of the hatch chiles to begin so that my grandson and I can commence our annual tradition of making and canning salsa for our families.  Yum!

We have been blessed with rain again this summer.  The corn and bean fields look very good for the farmers in our area.  A big portion of the State has moved out of the drought designation.  The Middle Loup River looks good for this time of the year although there is some irrigation going on.  Ball games are winding down and he school year will be starting up in a couple of weeks.

This Saturday, August 9, will be the second annual Boelus Days celebration.  We will be celebrating 140 years of this small town.  As with many small towns in the midwest, Boelus did have a higher population and several businesses that have since gone away.  We do still have a grocery store and a catering business that stay busy.  Whitefoot Catering is known for its exceptional good food and the grocery store benefits from not only the locals but the many visitors to the river for water sports.  There is also a well-known restaurant, the Gold Nugget which was bought by a young man and who is doing a brisk business.  Roger Welsch and Charles Kuralt were visitors there many times.  The Gold Nugget was involved with a lawsuit some years ago when the name was The Golden Nugget.  Evidently a business in Las Vegas was threatened by our restaurant's use of that same name.  Hence, it is now The Gold Nugget.  We are hoping that folks don't confuse the Las Vegas casino with us.

LOL.
